Emily Spencer’s poetry is published or upcoming in Kenyon Review, Pleiades, The Florida Review, Sonora Review, Cosmonauts Avenue, VIDA Review, and elsewhere. Spencer studied at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and earned an MFA in poetry from Boston University. She is a former high school English teacher for Boston Public Schools. Spencer is the recipient of a Kenyon Review Peter Taylor Teaching Fellowship and Boston University Global Writing Fellowship. She works for the Iowa Youth Writing Project and teaches wellness in the community. She is the founder of Black Poetry Review, a microjournal.

Her book manuscript was a finalist for the 2020 Walt McDonald First Book Contest, Texas Tech University Press. Her chapbook was a finalist for the 2020 Own Voices Contest.
